What to Wear
Watch the weather forecast and dress appropriately.
This event uses SportIdent (SI) electronic punching. If you don't have your own SI card, one is available to rent during the event for $2. If lost, the replacement fee is $40. Coaches are responsible for making sure their teams' SI-cards are returned. A Rental SI-Card Agreement must be signed. This agreement includes the standard event waiver.
Pre-registration is appreciated to help us plan the event (number of maps needed for each course and volunteer support). A Registration Form is available. Fill out one form for each individual/group and e-mail to email@example.com . The registration form includes the rental SI-card agreement.
Plan Your Teams
A Coach Team Planner spreadsheet is available to help plan your teams and assure coverage in all divisions.
Wear the Latest Electronic Gear!
Save the SI-card rental fee by buying your own card. If you do a lot of orienteering it's worthwhile. Many listed on the US Orienteering Federation's vendor page sell SI cards. The SportIdent (SI) system used by MVOC is the main e-punch system in the US, Europe, Australia, etc. It's a wise investment and looks cool.
How to Use E-Punch
Please review our Electronic Punching Info page. It's real geeky.
A lot of data can be gleaned from the e-punching system. Results are available as soon as you download. Preliminary event-wide results are available the day of the event. After the event detailed e-punch data will be posted on the MVOC web site. Here is an example of available data. It contains the time-of-day down to the second that each control is visited for each SI-card.
Necessary Evil Stuff for Competitions
If a protest is made of collusion by a team, and e-punch data supports the claim, the protest will be upheld. Inform your teams of the pitfalls of following others. The value of knowing how to navigate well, instead of relying on others, has withstood the test of time. Those who make their own navigation decisions learn how to navigate and are consistent top finishers.
Check out MVOC's Getting Started page. It has many links to help you get headed in the right direction, and keep you in touch with your map throughout the course. There are even map symbol and clue sheet quizzes!
