The day dawned with bright sunshine and temperatures in the 40's en route to azure blue skies and a high of 60°. No, wait. That was yesterday's forecast. We had rain with 40° temps all day. On Friday I had requests to hold the meet on Saturday, but alas, such a late schedule change is unworkable. Nonetheless, 118 orienteers in 58 groups steeled themselves against the gray skies to run in the woods. The large turnout for the weather can be attributed to this being the last local meet before the MVOC Jr. Champs on March 15^th. The Taylorsville MetroPark staff supplied us with firewood so we were able to get some warmth. My profuse apologies to all on the yellow and red courses. While setting courses I misplaced their control #1 on the wrong spur. If anyone lost an item at the meet, call me at 937-848-3106 and identify it.

On the orange course, Warren Mandrell, who normally runs red, had his family with him so he ran a shorter course. Hey Warren, next time see if you can convince them to orienteer in the rain. Then you'll have enough time to run red again. But look out. If Vincent Hand hadn't mis-punched, he would have won with a time of 30:26! Gabriel Svobodny moved from white to yellow with good results, and Kyle Hertel tried who normally does yellow tried the red course with the help of Mike Minium. Greenville tested two of their finest for the Jr. Champs on the red course with mixed results. Note that the green course at the Jr. Champs is set at the same technical level as red, only shorter. The red course at Taylorsville was a runners course with many open fields and trails. The Jr. Champs will have more climb and more woods. Thanks to Dan Mattingly and Louie Smith for driving in the rain from Louisville, KY, to run with us. Orienteering Louisville also has a large JROTC participation at their meets. Orienteers with times of less than 40 min. on the White course, 50 min. on the Yellow course, or 60 min on the Orange course may consider moving up a course at their next meet.
