Weather: 35-45° & sunny
Attendance: 86 in 60 groups

The courses were the same that were run the previous day at the MVOC Jr. Orienteering Championships. Competitors can compare their results with others who ran the same course the previous day. Fairborn and Badin High School teams in particular may want to do this.
The top 1/3 of finishers on a course (not counting OT's) should consider moving to the next higher course. Finishers with an OT or DNF should move to an easier course and master it (top 1/3) before moving higher.
Our Geocache event (GPS score course) was enjoyed by all the geochachers with Kevin Mitchell sweeping all 24 controls in excellent time. The white course had some heated competition with Parker Vaughan edging out his brother Petr by six seconds! It's all in the family with Heidi Vaughan capturing top honors on the yellow course by a wide margin. Competition was closer on the orange course with Tom & Kathleen Tiller taking home the gold after warming up with a 5K race that morning at Armco Park. Warren Mandrell bested Pat Meehan and Steve Vaughan, all OCINers, to win the Green course. Among the Goliaths on the red course, Larry Berna surmounted strong competition and emerged victorious after loosening his legs up in the Armco Park 5K. Second place Aaron Rourke also warmed up that morning with a kayak trip down Twin Creek. Less than a minute behind, third place Bill Swift wished he could have done more than drive around in the morning, and Steve Barnhart was not far back in fourth place.
I think everyone had a good time enjoying the fine day. Comments on the courses were mixed. Some had a little trouble here while others had it there. I think the most appropriate statement was that the courses were A-meet courses. That is the way I look at every course I design -- as if it were an A-meet course. I hate to get out of practice, and I'm sure you do too.
There was one opportunity I had to really challenge competitors on the advanced green course with a potential parallel error. There are two shallow, two-reentrant systems with ruined fences 110 meters apart, and though the fences run the same direction, the reentrants are aligned 90° to each other. The distance between them is far enough by A-meet standards for controls placed on similar features, so I purposely placed a red control on the first one the green runners would encounter on the way to their correct control. This did cause some head scratching by more than a couple green runners.
