Twin Creek MetroPark
Directed by Matt Bond

The week before the event I was out checking control locations that I chose while at home relaxing on the couch. Things change when you see them first hand. The most dramatic change was to the white course. Where a path crossed a stream near Twin Creek, the snow melt caused the creek to run high, and the crossing was a good seven feet wide and at least a foot deep. Reconfiguring the course in the field, what was planned to be 2.5Km with 70m climb turned into 1.4Km with 55m climb. I hope all 51 white participants had a good time on the course. I also discovered at that time some mapping errors affecting the red course, one of which required special notes to the red course competitors.

The day before the event Capt. Settlemoir and cadets Jeremy Smith, Billy Riechers, and Kenny Fugate from the Hamilton High School Navy JROTC unit helped set controls out at the flagging tape locations. All control setting went without a hitch.

Valentine's Day dawned bright, sunny, and a relatively warm 30+ degrees on its way to a high near 40. A little snow remained on the ground, mainly in the shaded areas and on north facing slopes. The first of 156 competitors in 82 groups arrived while I was setting up the directional signs to the north entrance of Twin Creek. The new shelter at the north entrance is now a prominent structure as it sits high on the hill that overlooks the Twin Creek valley with a commanding view that goes for miles and miles -- and where the wind always blows and blows. Wind chills remained below 30° the entire day, and the Hamilton HS NJROTC cadets are to be commended for their stalwart determination to persevere against the cold.

White course competition was very tight. In two instances two times are separated by only one second! Greenville HS NJROTC swept all placings 1-2-3 on this course. The Badin ROKS took 1-2 on yellow followed closely by Hamilton HS NJROTC. The talent is strong down south! Orange is a bit of a surprise. Most orange courses are longer than this, though they usually don't have as much climb. I think most who normally place well on orange have now moved up to green. On green I am impressed with the results, and it looks like the top prize at March 12th's MVOC Jr. O Champs is still undecided. The red course doesn't usually have more competitors that the green course, and I appologize for running out of pre-marked red course maps. Larry and Joel kept their heads together and placed third, while Tom moved into a solid second -- a higher placing than normal with a finish line exhaustion to prove he earned it. Then Bill Swift demonstrated his navigational pace with an indefatigable win.

Mike Minium did not run red or green as he wanted to due to a shoulder injury, yet still brought some juniors to run from the Liberty, IN, area. Mike writes:
Bad news, though... on the way home a deer ran into the side of my van. 725 a couple hundred yards west of the Montgomery/Preble County line. Deer was a 200+ pound doe at maximum sprint and did some pretty major damage. Kyle's ankle was injured where the door got pushed in, but hopefully it is just a bruise. For now, he's got an aircast & crutches & will be seeing an orthopedist tomorrow. The other boys were pretty shaken up but ok. Passenger door was crushed & window shattered, sliding door is also badly dented, and the vertical column between the doors has dents, so I expect repairs will take a while & might even be considered totalled... we'll see.
    Mike
