Course Review

November 10, 2007 - Woodland Trails Scout Camp

During this event, Bob Frey ran the green course and wore a Forerunner wrist watch that tracks his position via GPS satelites. After the event, he processed the data with Gartrip software that overlays it on a jpg image of a map and shows where he was.

As you can see Bob had a couple extra loops locating control #1. Then the big issue was making a parallel error en route to the pit at #10. Bob got into a reentrant-spur system oriented the same way as his target spur, but with much thicker vegetation. After hacking his way all over it thinking it was the correct one (and using up a lot of time), he bailed out and went north to the big field; then hiked back on trails.

This is a great tool for analyzing your route choice. It shows where you might save some time by going a different way. Like, 'Did I miss the trail juction at the top of the hill on the way to #2?' Hindsight is always 20/20, and this shows how you may prevent a similar error in the future.

Get this system and you too can analyze your courses like a pro.
