Harvest-O
September 16, 2007 - Englewood MetroPark
Weather: 80° & sunny
Attendance: 76 in 40 groups
Thanks for meet assistance: Mike Allen, Sharon Bond, Ben Bond, and Gerald Yip.
Our exceptionally dry late summer produced an awesome day for orienteering! Katie Williams and Springboro High School's team #4 duked it out on the yellow course and didn't get enough; so they went at it on the white course too, but the result was the same. Wayne's Jonathan Clark took the orange course, and Tom Wentling bested Gerald Yip on red as Gerald couldn't find one of the controls. Nope. Red is not easy!
Everyone at the event had a challenge navigating without referring to distinct topography. The Englewood area only has one hillside, so many were forced to interpret vegetation boundaries and other more subtle features as they orienteered.
Though no course crossed any bridal paths used by horse riders, some orienteers strayed off course and found themselves on bridal paths. The fact that they went off course is not itself bad. They can use their new known location to go back into the woods and find their control. Some however decided to hang out on the bridal paths, spook horses using the path, and verbally abuse horse riders. The severity is such that MetroParks Rangers were called. MVOC strives to work well with all park users. There is only one solution. Such individuals are themselves banned from future MVOC events for a period of two years and risk the same banishment for their organization.
