The late summer day was perfect for an O-meet.. But we were touch-and-go after the big winds
from hurricane Ike came through the prior Sunday. The sustained winds gusting to 80 miles per
hour downed trees throughout the
While not a record, the attendance was one of the
busiest we’ve seen. I guess it was a
combination of everyone getting tired of being cooped up without power, and it
being the first meet after the start of the new school year. All the MVOC Junior-O schools brought teams
to this event. The MVOC Junior-O
Championship looks like it could be a well fought event this year.
And some apologies. To those who
found the “Orienteering” direction sign at the park entrance to be facing away
from you, my apologies. In the Big-dark
of 08 that followed the Big-wind of 08, I didn’t have Internet access in the
last week of preparation. I didn’t get a
chance to check the club web-site directions and I assumed they matched the
route I had been following. Oops. To the large groups that waited patiently to
get registered. It was my first time as
meet director. I appreciate your
patience. I’ll certainly be better
prepared next time. And to the Yellow
course competitors, I appreciate your patience waiting for a start time. We had 66 people in 36 groups run the Yellow
course. That was a big crush of people
through the start area. Next time we’ll
do better.
As always, the top 1/3 of finishers on a course (not
counting OT's) should consider moving to the next higher course.
Finishers with an OT or DNF should move to an easier course and master it (top
1/3) before moving higher. Competitors on the green course should be confident
enough in their navigation to run the entire course.
