MVOC Harvest-O
September 27, 2009
Twin Creek MetroPark - Camp Hook
Weather: 60 to 65 degrees, Cloudy to Partly Cloudy, Dry.
Attendance: 110 in 52 groups.
First, I need to give out hearty Thank You to all who helped me make this event happen. I found that I had overcommitted my September, and I was seriously concerned how well I’d pull off this event. Instead I had lots of help and the meet turned out really successful. First, thank you Tom Svobodny for the map updates, setting the controls and helping to pick them up. Next thank you Stephen Anderson of BSA 320 who came out early Sunday to setup the event, stayed the day to help run the event, and helped pick up controls. Thank you to the many volunteers from BSA 320 who ran the registration and the start/finish area. At registration were Char and Christine Weubker, Russell Keith, and Robbie Smith. The start / finish table was staffed by Jim Weubker, George Ray, Dwight and Justin Matlock, and the timer was Kathy Alexander. You guys handled the noon crush like you’d done this before. I heard compliments how quickly the results were posted and how smoothly the starts went. Everyone, I really couldn’t have done this without your help. THANK YOU!
The late summer day started off cool and overcast, but by 1:00 p.m. the sun broke through and the fall weather was perfect for an O-meet. What a difference from last year after "The Big Wind" of hurricane Ike and "The Big Dark" that followed. This was also "National Orienteering Day" and in recognition, we gave away a box of goodies including Cliff Bars, socks, sweat bands, a T-shirt, and a book on orienteering. Thanks to the US Orienteering Foundation for providing the gifts. Attendance was pretty good this year with many first timers out on the course. It was fun seeing new folks try "O". All seemed to have a great time.
We had an interesting event where a couple of first-timers became lost on the course. They did the right thing, stopped, and started blowing their whistle. Nick Weubker and Jeff McPherson stopped their course run to provide assistance. Stopping to assist when a competitor signals for help is one of the orienteering rules, and helps to keep us all safe. Jeff and Nick, thanks for doing the right thing.
Lost and Found – a pocket knife was turned in. If you lost one, kindly email me, tommcclory<at>juno.com, with a description (color, any other details), and I’ll find a way to return it to you.
As always, the top 1/3 of finishers on a course (not counting OT's) should consider moving to the next higher course. Finishers with an OT or DNF should move to an easier course and master it (top 1/3) before moving higher.
