MVOC Cold Snow-O Orienteering Event Recap

The MVOC Cold-O with Chili and Sudoku Puzzle Challenge, originally scheduled for January 25, was postponed one week due to tremendous snowfall and extremely dangerous low temperatures. When the event finally took place, it evolved into a true Cold Snow-O—without chili or the Sudoku puzzle—but with plenty of snow, cold, and adventure.

Despite limited support from Beavercreek AFJROTC, the event ran very smoothly. Larry Berna and Nate Smith stepped in to provide event oversight, complete with the luxury of a heated porta-john—much appreciated given the conditions.

What began as Cold-O quickly became Snow-O, with 12 brave participants facing sub-20°F temperatures and nearly 14 inches of snow. The race featured a mass start, a two-hour time limit, and—most importantly—everyone survived with great attitudes intact. A few ankle-deep creek crossings added to the challenge.

Old-fashioned manual punch cards were used instead of electronic timing, and participants accepted the change without complaint.A cold, snowy day—but a successful and memorable MVOC Snow-O with strong competition, teamwork, and outstanding attitudes all around.

Competition Highlights

The competition was fierce. Four competitors finished all 20 controls within five minutes of each other, led by:

This was especially impressive given that Control #17 was misplaced and not clearly represented on the map, yet the competitive spirit remained strong.
